Several people injured with a knife at a Parisian train station, one man arrested
The assessment has stabilized, according to two sources gathered by AFP, one from the police and the other close to the case. The injured persons “were taken care of by the emergency services. Thanks to those who subdued the author of this unacceptable act,” Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said on X (formerly Twitter).
The man, of Malian nationality, “was first subdued by passersby” before the intervention of the railway police, who then handed him over to the regular police, detailed the police source. The suspect “did not shout during his action,” added this source. “He showed the police an Italian driving license,” the same source specified.
According to his documents, he was born on January 1, 1992, according to the source close to the case. A large screen was installed to hide the scene, observed an AFP journalist. Over a dozen uniformed law enforcement officers and others in plainclothes with orange armbands were also visible.
According to the Paris police prefect, Laurent Nunez, who went to the scene, at this stage it is not a “terrorist act”, the suspect “suffers from mental disorders”. The assailant, according to Mr. Nunez, has been “legally staying in Italy since 2016, with a valid permit issued in 2019,” according to the documents in his possession, “spontaneously” declared to suffer from “psychiatric disorders”, and “medications” were found on him, added the police prefect during a press conference at Gare de Lyon. “The traffic is slow between Paris-Gare de Lyon and Montargis and between Paris-Gare de Lyon and Montereau,” she also announced.
The Paris prosecutor’s office indicated being informed of the facts. An investigation has been opened and entrusted to the 2nd district of the judicial police according to a source close to the case. The National Anti-Terrorist Prosecutor’s Office has also specified being on alert.
