The Athens Airport’s IPO Raises €785 Million for Greece
The international airport of Athens Eleftherios Venizelos (AIA) has indicated that the final offering price has been set at 8.20 euros per share, at the top of the initially announced range, representing a market capitalization of 2.46 billion euros. The demand exceeded 8.6 billion euros, it added.
The first day of trading is set for February 7th. This appetite for Greek assets is explained by the country’s economic performance and reforms implemented in recent years by the government.
In the specific case, the international airport of Athens is experiencing significant growth. It welcomed over 28 million passengers last year and its traffic is now 10% higher than the record set in 2019, just before Covid-19.
The government plans to raise nearly 5.77 billion euros through privatizations this year. Another event that has helped Greece regain market confidence is the upgrade in the country’s credit rating by Standard & Poor’s in October 2023, placing Greek obligations in the investment category, indicating that Greece is now considered a strong borrower.
