AFCON 2024: South Africa Thanks Its Goalkeeper, Eliminates Cape Verde and Advances to the Semi-Finals
Finally, it was the Bafana Bafana who emerged victorious (0-0, 2-1 on penalties). Hugo Broos and his men owe a huge thank you to Ronwen Williams.
The game between Cape Verde and South Africa did not help much either. It was closed for a long time, and ultimately it was the goalkeepers who had the final say.
Or rather, one goalkeeper, named Ronwen Williams, who seemed to have magnets in his gloves during the penalty shootout. In the game, the Bafana Bafana showed more initiative and had a few opportunities.
Teboho Mokoena, as usual, attempted a long-range shot to bring the first strike of the match on target (10th minute). But Hugo Broos’ men never really threatened Vozinha’s goal, unlike their opponents.
The Sharks, on the other hand, were less prolific, but still managed to create some real tense moments. Captain Ryan Mendes, for example, showed composure by eliminating a defender before unleashing a shot from the penalty spot (40th minute).
It took a South African heel to prevent the opening goal. Garry Rodrigues also failed to score despite facing Ronwen Williams twice (55th and 70th minutes).
The real match-winning opportunity fell to Benchimol, who was perfectly set up to score, but Williams managed to deflect the shot in additional time. The score remaining 0-0, the match went into extra time, and eventually into a penalty shootout.
Vozinha made two outstanding saves, but it was the South African goalkeeper who had the final word. He saved the first three penalties with great dives before making a fourth and final save, allowing South Africa to reach the semi-finals for the first time in 24 years.
Thanks to him, South Africa has made it to the semi-finals.
