Police have killed two assailants who were trying to attack them in front of the courthouse in the country’s largest city. The attack occurred in a highly tense security context in Turkey. The two assailants, a man and a woman, were quickly shot dead by the authorities, but they had time to harm six people, three police officers, and three civilians. The authorities did not specify what type of weapon the attackers had used, but a video broadcast in the media shows one of them holding a gun before being killed.

In 2015, this group had already killed a prosecutor in the same court. This is a new attack in a major Turkish city less than two months before local elections. In late January, a man was killed in Istanbul in an attack claimed by the Islamic State group. In October, two police officers were injured in an attack on the Ministry of the Interior headquarters in Ankara.
